American Literature Association Annual Conference
Boston, Massachusetts | May 25-28, 2023
The Shirley Jackson Society invites scholars at all stages of their careers to submit to our panels for the American Literature Association’s Annual Conference in Boston, May 25-28, 2023.
We are planning for two panels this year: 1. Ecocritical Approaches to Shirley Jackson, and 2. Shirley Jackson: Witchcraft and Magic. For Ecocritical Approaches, you may consider ecologies and environments, ecofeminism, the ecoqueer, the ecogothic, definitions of wilderness, “natures,” and plant or animal studies. For Witchcraft and Magic, you may consider Jackson’s portrayals of occult practices such as potions, magic charms, and the Tarot, how her work responds to traditional, historical, and/or literary renderings of witches and witchcraft, her personal interest in witchcraft, witchcraft as a feminist or queer practice, or any other relevant topic. Whenever possible, we are most interested in scholarly work that addresses lesser-studied Jackson texts. Please send a 350-word abstract and short bio to shirleyjacksonstudies [at] gmail.com by January 15, 2023. When submitting please use the subject line “Jackson and [Ecocriticism or Witchcraft] ALA 2023,” and copy and paste your abstract and bio into the body of the email. |
